When choosing to wear Invisalign, there is an added level of responsibility that is required. These removable aligners offer greater flexibility; however, they come with the understanding that you will take proper care of your trays when they are not in your mouth. So, what should you do if you accidentally lose one or both of your aligners? What can you do to keep this from happening? Keep reading to find out.

Steps to Take If You Lose Your Aligner(s)

It can be alarming when you cannot find your Invisalign aligners. After all, this type of orthodontic treatment is a financial investment; however, the first thing you should do is not panic. Instead, you should:

  • Look around you to see if you can locate them. Check under couch cushions, in your purse or bag, underneath tables, or in coat pockets. Make sure to retrace your steps.
  • Call your dentist to let them know that you’ve lost your aligner(s). They will instruct you on what to do to avoid a serious delay in your treatment.
  • If recommended, wear the previous set of aligners while a new set is being created. If your dentist suggests moving ahead in your treatment, go ahead and do so.

How to Avoid Losing Your Aligners

If you want to avoid finding yourself in this position, be proactive about your Invisalign aligners and make sure you know where they are at all times. Remember, they should only come out when preparing to eat, drink, or clean them.

You can:

  • Make sure you’re wearing your trays 20-22 hours each day. Try to avoid taking them out as much as you can, only when absolutely necessary.
  • Keep them in a protective case within your purse or bag when you’re out to eat. This keeps them from being wrapped up in a napkin and accidentally thrown away.
  • Place your aligners in a designated spot if you take them out for any other reason (i.e., family photos, giving a presentation, etc.).

To achieve success with Invisalign, it’s important that you stay on top of your daily routine and be responsible for your aligners. Doing so will allow you to stay on track with treatment and see a straighter, more beautiful smile in less time.
