Invisalign is often the preferred method of treatment among teenagers and adults. Discreet in its appearance and flexible because of the removable trays, this clear aligner system provides many great benefits. But what if you grind your teeth at night? Will this bad habit keep you from experiencing the advantages only Invisalign can provide? Keep reading to find out the truth.

Will Teeth Grinding Damage Invisalign Aligners?

Teeth grinding, or bruxism as it is clinically known, is a common problem millions of people suffer from, and it can be caused by stress or even a misaligned bite. When looking to fix your malocclusion (poor bite), you may wish to pursue Invisalign, but what about your bruxism?

The truth is that the wear time for clear aligners is generally 1-2 weeks for each set, so the amount of potential damage they experience because of teeth grinding is unlikely to be enough to hinder their effectiveness.

Even if extreme wear and tear occur, a new aligner can be created for you to wear until it’s time to switch to the next set in the series.

Will Invisalign Be Able to Fix Your Teeth Grinding Problem?

It’s possible that once your bite is properly aligned, you will no longer grind your teeth during the day or at night; however, this is not a guarantee.

Grinding or clenching your teeth may significantly reduce once you achieve results with Invisalign. Before you can talk to your dentist about receiving a custom nightguard to wear, you will enter the retention phase of orthodontic treatment. You will be required to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position.

Designed to mimic Invisalign aligners, you can expect the same level of protection for your teeth. Eventually, though, you will shift from wearing it every day to only needing it at night a few times a week. At this point, you can switch back and forth between your retainer and nightguard.

This custom appliance works similarly to a clear aligner but provides a more cushioned barrier that prevents teeth from touching. It also alleviates the tension and stress placed on your jaw joints, allowing for greater pain relief.

Don’t dismiss the idea of Invisalign treatment even if you grind your teeth. With your dentist’s help, you can build a plan that addresses the underlying cause of your bruxism while also improving the health and look of your smile.
