Signs of Gum Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t know what to look for, gum disease can be\ndifficult to spot. Basically, gums that are healthy will appear firm and a lighter\npink color. If you notice red, swollen gums that bleed\nwhile your child brushes their teeth, they may have the first stage of gum\ndisease. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More advanced cases\nwill manifest in chronic bad breath, gum recession, pus in between teeth, changes\nin your child\u2019s bite, and\/or loose permanent teeth. By acting quickly and\ntreating gum disease right away, you can spare your child from suffering tooth\nloss and potentially getting serious medical conditions like heart disease or\ndiabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cause of Gum Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gum disease is chronic inflammation in the gum tissue that\nis caused by harmful bacteria in your child\u2019s mouth. These bacteria live in\nplaque, the white substance that attaches to the teeth, particularly between them,\nafter your child eats. If plaque is allowed to remain there, it hardens into\ntartar. Then, the bacteria produce acids that irritate the gums and lead to the\nsymptoms mentioned above. Without treatment<\/a>, gum\ndisease can ultimately cause loss of permanent teeth and cause dangerous\ninflammation in other parts and systems of the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preventing Gum Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The good news about gum disease is that it is fairly simple\nto avoid altogether. All it takes is incorporating healthy oral habits in your\nchild\u2019s lifestyle. Every day, they need to brush and floss their teeth,\nremoving the plaque and bacteria before it has a chance to settle. Then, you\nalso need to bring your child to the dentist for a checkup and cleaning every\nsix months. That way, the dentist can catch any developing problems and remove\nplaque and tartar that your child may have missed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By taking the time and effort to teach your child proper\noral care now while they are young, you can prevent gum disease not only in the\nnear future but also well into their adult years.
